Staffed not just by architects and designers but also by coders, engineers, and strategists, the Rockwell Group is an innovative, tech-savvy firm that creates multisensory environments using state-of-the-art lighting systems and arresting visual effects.

David founded Rockwell Group in 1984. Over the past 30 years, Rockwell Group has carved out a unique role encompassing multiple ideas, design styles, clients and project types. When he was 12, David’s family had a dramatic scene change, moving from Deal, New Jersey to Guadalajara, Mexico. There he discovered a whole new world of vibrant marketplaces, street life, and public spaces.

Rockwell is an award-winning, 250-person interdisciplinary architecture and design firm with a focus in hospitality, culture, healthcare, education, product, and set design.

Its diverse portfolio includes Nobu hotels and restaurants, the auditorium for the 2014 TED Conference, and the occasional high-end residence.

The Manhattan-based practice, with offices in Madrid and Shanghai, was founded 30 years ago by David Rockwell, who grew up immersed in the dramatic arts, a passion reflected in his Tony-nominated set designs. “Theater has been a huge influence,” Rockwell says. “I like to bring a scenic designer’s sensibility to my architectural work.”

A combination of interactive technology, handmade objects, custom fixtures and furniture create environments that seamlessly integrate technology, craftsmanship and design.

Crafting a unique and individual narrative concept for each project is fundamental to Rockwell Group’s successful design approach. From the big picture to the smallest detail, the story informs and drives the design.

Amongst their recent projects you can find The New York Edition hotel and NeueHouse shared work spaces in New York and Los Angeles. To celebrate the firm’s 30th anniversary, the group published the book “What if? The Architecture and Design of David Rockwell”.
