Classic Manhattan Apartment Meets Warm Minimalism

New York real estate is a fascinating and growing market. Within many prewar apartments, it is hard to find one that checks all the right boxes for a designer gut renovation that can truly be effective.
If on one hand they have the kind of classical details and structure that make interior designers’ imaginations go off, on the other side there are few instances where the whole renovation isn’t the only course of action.
When we talk about this 3,000-square-foot beauty on Madison Square Park, all the right boxes got checked – location, size and a dreamy view overlooking the treetops. However, the lack of the aesthetic stylish look the family desired was easily spotted.
“The apartment was a mess: bad colors, bad finishes. Everything was brown; there were too many walls. It felt very heavy and closed in.”
– Ryan Korban
Ryan Korban, the responsible for converting the three-bedroom space from what he called “suburban” into a classic Manhattan aerie that blended downtown chic with uptown elegance, used the apartment’s many windows as a framework, opening up the space and knocking down partitions, installing discreet built-in storage.
The family-friendly layout separated the public and private spaces and spoke volumes into the transformed residence featuring his brand of warm minimalism.
Working side by side with the client, Korban established a palette of cool grays, creamy whites and moody blacks, pushing the design for a sleek urbanity.
“It’s good to have a client who knows where things should be. He has a very clear vision of design and quality.”
– Ryan Korban
The metallic finishes used contributed to the cosmopolitan vibe spread throughout the apartment. The exception being, the kitchen where polished chrome joined the statuario marble – a fitting combination of contemporary and traditional elements.
The silks and velvets – particularly in the master bedroom – added to the monochromatic cocooning effect.
“I’m a firm believer in continuity and consistency, I don’t like too much variety.”
– Ryan Korban
Still, there are many moments of surprise or what Korban calls the “wow factor,” which punctuate the restrained backdrop. A collection of colorful modern art by Basquiat and George Condo and the drama showcased on the floral wallpaper and black finishes.
“It’s sexy and masculine but still feminine and elegant,”
– Ryan Korban
And just like the apartment itself, the contrasting elements create an aesthetic that feels appropriate for a modern family—and, of course, a New York family.
