Discover 3 Incredible Projects in New York by Skidmore Owings Merrill

Today we present you some of the best architecture projects from Skidmore Owings Merrill in NYC. Let´s take a look 🙂

One World Trade Center

Completed in 2014 by skidmore owings merrill, One World Trade Center recaptures the New York skyline, reasserts downtown Manhattan’s preeminence as a business center, and establishes a new civic icon for the country. It is a memorable architectural landmark for the city and the nation — a building whose simplicity and clarity of form will remain fresh and timeless. Extending the long tradition of American ingenuity in high-rise construction, the design solution is an innovative mix of architecture, structure, urban design, safety, and sustainability.

One World Trade Center is a bold icon in the sky that acknowledges the adjacent memorial. While the memorial, carved out of the earth, speaks of the past and of remembrance, One World Trade Center speaks about the future and hope as it rises upward in a faceted form filled with, and reflecting, light. This tower evokes the slender, tapering triangular forms of great New York City icons such as the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building and replaces almost one quarter of the office space lost on September 11, 2001.

As the tower rises from a cubic base, its edges are chamfered back, resulting in a faceted form composed of eight elongated isosceles triangles. At its middle, the tower forms a perfect octagon in plan and then culminates in a glass parapet whose plan is a 150-foot-by-150-foot square, rotated 45 degrees from the base. Its overall effect is that of a crystalline form that captures an ever-evolving display of refracted light. As the sun moves through the sky or we move around the tower, the surfaces appear like a kaleidoscope, and will change throughout the day as light and weather conditions change.

BACCARAT HOTEL & RESIDENCES

The Baccarat tower is a 605-foot, mixed-use building located on 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue in New York City, directly across from the Museum of Modern Art. The program consists of exclusive condominiums, a luxury hotel, and a public library.

The residential and hotel components of the tower are flanked by a solid frame on the east and west elevations, providing the main structure of the building and contrasting with the openness and transparency of the north and south facades. The tower commands outstanding views of Manhattan landmarks including Central Park and the Empire State Building.

The Baccarat Hotel and Residences exhibits its elegance and luxury in the tower podium where guests and residents have access to a variety of distinct amenities: bars, event spaces, lounges, and a world-class spa and fitness center.

7 WORLD TRADE CENTER

Completed in 2006 by skidmore owings merrill, this 52-story office tower signaled the rebirth of the Lower Manhattan following the September 2001 attacks and set a standard for the World Trade Center master plan.

Conveying a sense of lightness and establishing a strong street-level presence were central to the design. The tower rises like a shimmering glass shard, with a curtain wall that reflects the ever-changing sky. The building’s lower portion is clad in a perforated steel screen that was created in collaboration with designer James Carpenter. Behind the metal scrim sits a panel of blue and white LEDs whose intensity gradually shifts throughout the day. In the spacious lobby, a captivating light installation by the artist Jenny Holzer draws the attention of passers-by.

As New York City’s first commercial office building to receive LEED® certification, 7 World Trade Center incorporates a range of sustainable features, starting with the use of recycled structural steel, insulation, and interior materials. Over its life, the tower is expected to use less energy than a traditionally built skyscraper of comparable size, in part by using collected rainwater to cool the building, and by directly metering tenants to encourage energy conservation.
