Design and the Hand

Women in the midcentury often collaborated with industry, in an era when a “handcrafted look” warmed the rigorous geometry of modernism. This panel considers parallels with today’s design field, in which “handmade” has become a marker of good design.

Jennifer Scanlan is a New York-based independent curator focusing on contemporary art and design. Her next exhibition “Pathmakers: Women in Art, Craft, and Design, Midcentury and Today,” will be on view at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, from April 27 – September 28, 2015, after which it travels to the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.
Panel: Will include both established and emerging designers, company owners represented at ICFF, journalists, and scholars of design history.

In a candid and casual conversation, the two discuss the secrets of a successful collaboration, their work process, and the secrets of creating a successful restaurant.

ICFF Talks hosts Industry Icons Addressing Color Trends, Emerging Styles, Techniques and New Materials
Positioned right on the show floor, ICFF Talks features panels of industry leaders discussing changes, new introductions, materials and trends in the interior design world. An audience of over 150 architects, interior designers, developers, and visual merchandisers join in to listen and learn about what is happening in their industry.
Topics include making good design a good business, creating a design legacy, and other best business practices to ensure success as well as designing “green” and how to be constantly innovative. New materials are explored and new applications for traditional materials are revealed.

International markets trends and new projects are addressed especially in fast developing regions such as Eastern Europe and Turkey where new and emerging design talents and material applications continually surface and can be explored and learned from.
Moderated by the editors of leading industry media such as Interior Design, Azure, Dwell, Metropolis, Surface, Wallpaper, Architizer and Interni, top designers wade in on projects they have underway or are in the process of developing.
