JnrlStr (pronounced “general store”) is a gallery and retail shop showcasing beautiful, useful and innovative everyday objects. The shop’s objects are organized by color, with each month focused on a single color that shifts throughout the year.
JnrlStr is curated by Doug Jaeger (former president of the Art Directors Club) and Kristin Sloan (former dancer and director of new media for New York City Ballet). Sloan and Jaeger are designers and creative technologists who push boundaries in the fields of marketing, visual media and the performing arts. They get excited when they find exceptional design and efficient functionality in our everyday lives. Someone can see them client work at JaegerSloan Inc.
Sloan and Jaeger source meticulously designed items from around the world that match a monthly rotating color scheme. Current finds include beautifully packaged Marvis toothpaste ($7), Yoshii absorbent Japanese towels ($22–$54) and neon cloth extension cords ($24–$34) made in-house. Vintage pieces include a 1969 Valentine typewriter ($620), Viewmaster toys from the ’70s and ’80s ($55 each) and a sleek Braun kitchen scale ($77).
At Nest Collection, we can see amazing paintings from Leah Tinari, curated by JnrlStr. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, artist LEAH TINARI creates playful, stylized and deliberate paintings that evoke a sense of nostalgia for some viewers, and a sense of voyeurism for others. In 2010 Leah expanded her artistic endeavors, opening the restaurant Fatta Cuckoo at 63 Clinton Street with her husband Marty.
