Interior Designer Patrick McGrath and this Chelsea Tower New York Apartment Renovation

Interior Designer Patrick McGrath repaired a pair of neighboring two-bedroom apartments and gave them more space, color and life. See how down below!
One could say an interior designer always remembers their renovations. Why? It involves giving new life to a whole new space, new stories to an old written book, turn a house into a home for someone. And when the renovation starts out with a small decoration and is left with an unrecognizable life, it is impossible to forget.
Patrick McGrath’s renovation came to be when Reinaldo Leandro – Ashe + Leandro, architect half of AD100 firm – introduced him to the owners of the two side-by-side two-bedroom apartments.
“It started off as a little interior design project, and then it turned into this entire gut renovation, so it was really exciting for me.”

The combination of the two apartments in the Chelsea high-rise provided McGrath the chance for a good deal of creativity and feeling. He conceived, after all, the new layout – sans architect – and what would comprise the interiors.
The ultimate needs of the owners – a retired English professor turned real-estate developer and his artist wife – ended up meaning a transition from the four-bedroom apartment into just a single bedroom, the master. With a library and an expensive art studio in the plans, it just made sense to give the Chelsea loft a feel of a “big open space”.
The challenge extended to McGrath -> Create a sense of flow out of a series of rooms, doors and immovable support and HVAC columns.
“When you walk in now you go into the public space—kitchen, dining room, and we did this huge open living room and library—and then the other apartment became the private space, her art studio, the master bedroom, and a huge master bathroom,”

The whole distinct sense of airiness is due not only to McGrath’s fresh floor plan but also to the existing elements he was gifted: walls of windows contributing northern, southern, and eastern exposure, as well as showstopping views of the entire downtown skyline.
The whole process was very easy on the trio and they were never short of agreement. Alright, there was this one thing where a little bit of convincing was needed – the Ralph Lauren custom sofa.
The artist in the house was all in with incorporating hand-painted tiles in addition to painting ceramics throughout the home.
And even if the owners had talks about potentially purchasing hallway space in order to achieve airy open vision, McGrath fells like his biggest success was effectively and beautifully marrying two units into what now has gained the feeling of a big floor-through apartment without any evidence of its previous state.
“Sometimes those challenges can make you think more creatively! Now the owners’ home is precisely tailored to their needs, and evokes their lifestyle. They’re really well traveled, and I think the whole apartment reflects both their tastes and travels.”
– Patrick McGrath
