New York Apartment
California meets New York

Madeline Weeks, a stylist, creative consultant and costume designer for film and video, took on the challenge of transforming this Manhattan apartment – that had no closets, zero bookshelves, and a total lack of lighting – into the outstanding place it has become.
“It was this empty space with dents in the walls and leaks in the ceiling, and I was… kind of excited. I could see this was a special space.”
– Madeline Weeks
We could say Weeks had a vision. Ignoring all that was wrong and that on everyone’s eyes seemed impossible to look beyond, she chose to focus on all the many perks: homey dark wood beams, vaulted ceilings, skylights, the quiet and private location at the back of the building and the intimate terrace sandwiched between all the exterior walls.
“It’s almost like a secret garden in a way,”

We could say Weeks had a vision. Ignoring all that was wrong and that on everyone’s eyes seemed impossible to look beyond, she chose to focus on all the many perks: homey dark wood beams, vaulted ceilings, skylights, the quiet and private location at the back of the building and the intimate terrace sandwiched between all the exterior walls.
This DIY project entailed covering the oddly painted brick walls with white paint, uncovering skylights and fashioning closets and bookshelves for Weeks’ significant collection. Not to mention that after her move from GQ – where she was fashion director – to a home office last year, she had to rethink her working space.
The process included many ideas and tips offered by her interior design friends and some “awesome gardener” pals. Still, there was never much planned to begin with.
“I figured it out as I went along. So, yeah, I pretty much designed it myself.”
– Madeline Weeks
And even though she’s right in the mix of Manhattan, Weeks sought what we would all consider an opposite aesthetic for her living space. With references to her friends’ ranch in the legendary NorCal destination, plus dashes of Laurel Canyon, Santa Barbara and Santa Monica.
“You walk in and there’s a sense of calm, I wanted it to have that feeling of once you walk in, the street feels very far away. And I really love California. While I’m here in New York, I also wanted it to feel like a California house, with a good energy.” – Madeline Weeks
Keeping a cohesive and subtle palette while aiming for an interesting mix helped accomplish the tranquility Weeks longed for. Her oasis of calm is not just soothing to the soul but also nourishing.
“A home is a living thing. It’s alive and you’re really just a caretaker, re-curating it once in a while, like a gallery. It needs to feel alive.”
– Madeline Weeks
