For the ones who can easily get lost with all the offers an event such as New York Design Week 2013 can offer, we have gone through the entire program and the overwhelming roster of events to select a few of the best which we believe you should attend if you happen to be in the city this month. From the few hundred events listed on NYCxDESIGN website, we have compiled the top six not to be missed events of the year. From fashion, to photography, art, design, and architecture, and whether you are a design professional or just a design lover, these events should give provide you a gist of what’s happening these days at New York Design Week. ABC CARPET & HOME // VISION ON 2 FEATURING TOM DIXON, VERPAN & ‘IMAGINE NO FRACKING’ BY YOKO ONO

NYC design destination ABC Carpet & Home presents VISION ON 2, through May 23rd. The exhibition serves as a three-dimensional magazine featuring the cutting edge of art, design, beauty and sustainability, including ‘Imagine No Fracking,’ an installation by artist and activist, Yoko Ono. On view, Vision on 2, an interactive museum, features the contemporary classic works of Verpan – a true rebel and pioneer in the world of lighting and design – new 2013 collections from Tom Dixon, focusing on texture, finish, and materiality, and an innovative lighting installation utilizing sculptural LED as 21st century functional art.

The American Turkish Society is putting Turkey on the map of design in New York City with “Design: Istanbul-New York,” a debut exhibition of contemporary design from Turkey at the Wanted Design international fair. Selected by a jury of industry professionals consisting of Gaye Cevikel, Ayse Birsel, Ali Tayar, Defne Koz and Ferda Kolatan, featured products include “Pleat Box” lighting product by Mashallah; unique wine set by Ali Bakova; “Attractive” mirror by Umut Demirel; “Relax” tableware by Tamer Nakisci; “Tuluat” rug design by Koray Ozgen; “Novela Vessels by Muzz Design; and “Tearend Teacup & Saucer” by Can Yalman. Funded by a generous grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation, the program also features an open discussion on “Design Entrepreneurship” with GAIA&GINO founder Gaye Cevikel and design writer and style editor Melissa Feldman on Saturday, May 18, 4pm, to be held at Gallery 6; and an edible performance by Brooklyn based mixologists The Guinea Pig Group and food artist Dilara Erbay on Sunday, May 19, 3pm at Effeti Showroom, both venues within Terminal Stores. Doug Johnston: Light Sculptures

Artist and designer Doug Johnston has been making baskets, sculptures and stools from coiled and stitched cord since 2010. In utilizing a limited palette of either cotton or nylon and a selection of white, black or primary-colored stitching, Johnston transforms this seemingly simple, raw linear material into expressive yet minimal volumetric forms. Through subtle variations in form and color, Johnston is able to achieve a quiet elegance while maintaining the clarity of the material, offering each piece “a language that stems from the use of everyday tools and familiar techniques,” says Johnston.
