Doug Johnston: Light Sculptures
May 17–May 31 / All Day
Location: Mondo Cane
Opening Party Date and Time: Friday, May 17th 6-9 PM
Featured designers and design collaborations: Doug Johnston
Artist and designer Doug Johnston has been making baskets, sculptures and stools from coiled and stitched cord since 2010. In utilizing a limited palette of either cotton or nylon and a selection of white, black or primary-colored stitching, Johnston transforms this seemingly simple, raw linear material into expressive yet minimal volumetric forms. Through subtle variations in form and color, Johnston is able to achieve a quiet elegance while maintaining the clarity of the material, offering each piece “a language that stems from the use of everyday tools and familiar techniques,” says Johnston.
