The New York Designer Behind 305 Fitness Studio in NYC

The 80’s are back in the form of a funky fitness studio right in the Upper East Side.

Gym’s are never the most exciting of places! In the middle of all the machines and exercise mats, there’s few places for fun and vibrant designs. Still, why couldn’t function and design coexist? 305 Fitness Studio located in NYC’s Upper East Side proves that they can – with a little help from Sasha Bikoff.
After taking by storm L.A., Boston and D.C, the Miami-inspired gym sets his sights in New York. Designer Sasha Bikoff was brought on to completely turn the space around, transforming it into what she describes as Miami Vice-meets-Memphis Milano.
Bikoff, a native of the Upper East Side, who spens quite a bit of time in Miami and has loved 305 since its debut immediately took the chance to decor the 6000-square-foot space that was formerly a thrift shop – despite the tight budget and a two-month lead time.

Familiar with the studio’s culture, and after impressing the founder Sadie Kurzban with her Memphis staircase at last year’s Kips Bay Show House, Bikoff proved to be the right choice with designs that were just as lively as the studio itself.
“305 Fitness is a dance workout that’s inspired by Miami nightlife culture! When you work out in the studio, there are strobe lights and a live DJ playing all the current hits.”

Bikoff set about creating a wildly colorful space full of cool graphics and retro accents. The studio turns a traditional exercise environment on its head with features from all the best new trends and colors of 2019.
Kicking the party just outside, 305’s façade in pink, green and yellow, stands out among the brick and steel of Third Avenue.
“I think, you know, you look at an Equinox, it’s so blah, (…) But I think the era of exercise studios is changing. There’s such a branding opportunity here.”

In the studio’s reception area, visitors are greeted by a graphic wallpaper that was the result of Bikoff’s signature multireferential process. With sketches of her initial ideas, 305’s in-house graphic designer translated them into the colorful, dynamic wall covering we now love.
“For me, and I think for lots of people, it’s still hard to find the energy and make time in our busy lives to exercise. For this reason, I wanted to further inspire and encourage people through a bold, colorful, and fun party design that would keep people coming back! The workout makes you feel good, so the space should make you feel the same way.”

Pink, blue and yellow are the main pieces throughout this unique fitness studio!
A saturated palette of yellow, turquoise, green, and pink infuses every corner with energy. From the citron-tiled bathroom (Bikoff’s favorite room, which she says feels like a “cool art installation”) to the custom wallpaper Bikoff designed to draw energy from Tom Wesselmann’s art, there’s cool detailing everywhere you look.
“Terrazzo is a huge trend right now and something I’ve always admired and Millennial pink is here to stay, so of course we did a pink lounge complete with a disco ball and leather banquette seating. Colorful tiled bathrooms are also becoming a trend—people want bathrooms that are more fun, and color is a great way to pack a punch in a small space.”

Looking at it entirely: the place is a mashup of aesthetic influences, executed by a distinctly daring eye, and presented as a manifestation of fun and creativity.
