Top 5 Luxurious & Cheap New York City hotels

Known for overrated rates even at modest hotels, the Big Apple can be a difficult place to find luxury lodging at a bargain value. But thanks to a growing number of boutique hotels focused on the efficiency-minded traveler, high-end accommodations at mid-range prices have become increasingly more available. The next time you visit the New York, you should consider a visit to one of these surprisingly luxurious New York City hotels:

Sanctuary Hotel – Times Square

Been there done that! Having won International Hotel of the Year honors from the European Hotel Awards in 2011, it’s a wonder the midtown Sanctuary Hotel has remained somewhat under the radar since opening in 2010. This slow rise to superstardom has worked to the advantage of Sanctuary visitors, who enjoy a quiet oasis from the chaos of the city and deluxe in-room amenities at reasonable nightly rates, starting at around $270 per night. With two lively bars and a rooftop lounge, Sanctuary has as much to offer on-site as it does through its coveted Times Square location.

The Jane – West Village

Rooms scarcely larger than the cruise ship cabins they emulate are the hallmark of The Jane Hotel in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, which explains how rates can hover near $90 a night.
The Jane’s classic sense of luxury starts with a Sinatra-style ambience in the lobby and chic atmosphere of the French Moroccan Café Gitane at the entrance. Rooms feature flat-screen TVs, complimentary wireless Internet access, iPod docking stations and 300 thread-count sheets. Old-fashioned touches like brass room keys and complimentary bicycles give The Jane a homey touch that combined with its friendly staff and residential neighborhood makes it one of New York City’s trendiest affordable hotels.

Trendy? Vintage? True story, but still far from the heart of NYC.

The Pod Hotel – Midtown

Hype? New? Chic & modern? In the burning midtown Manhattan this hotel is designed with efficiency in mind, featuring capsule-like rooms with single beds, built-in work stations and little else. Guests can splurge with a larger bed and en-suite bath, but the luxury of The Pod is less about space and more about quality of space. Each room offers clean, sleek décor and modern amenities, including a high-definition flat-screen TV, iPod docking station and nuanced lighting, adding value to the already-low average of $120 a night. Common courtyards and a trendy social atmosphere encourage interaction among guests, making The Pod particularly desirable to young travellers.

Distrikt Hotel – Midtown

A city bus station doesn’t often indicate the nearby presence of a luxury hotel, but the cosmopolitan vibe surrounding Distrikt Hotel is part of its charm. The midtown location is also steps from popular landmarks like the Empire State Building and Times Square. Bright and clean accommodations, reputable service and nightly rates below average (starting at £150 per night) earn Distrikt high marks from repeat guests.

Nu Hotel – Brooklyn

For a New York experience with more space for your money, think outside Manhattan to the Nu Hotel, located in downtown Brooklyn. Just a subway ride from all the city’s most famous attractions, The Nu openly strives to emulate the physical comfort of wearing your “favorite T-shirt and that beloved pair of jeans.” The self-styled “lifestyle hotel” offers a mini bar, flat-screen TV and work station in standard rooms with options to bring your pet or reserve a complimentary bicycle (how COOL is that?). A standard room in spring starts at $170 a night.
