Today NYDA brings you three design icons that are the most influential masters of interior design industry of the 20th and 21st century and the inspirational source to a lot of famous interior designers like Kelly Westler.
This American furniture designer and sculpture was an important figure in the countries design history. Recognized for his elegant and whimsical works, the furniture designer was an important figure in the American Studio Furniture Group. His designs were made in bold color palettes and unique materials, including wood, fiberglass, and plastic. Born in 1956, Castle studied at the University of Kansas, earning his BFA in industrial design in 1958 and his MFA in sculpture in 1961.
Born in NYC in 1865, the interior designer was known as “America’s first decorator”. Even at a young age, de Wolfe had decisive ideas about design, and she resolved to make it her life’s mission to surround herself with inspiring interiors. The dark woodwork, heavy curtains and clunky furniture of their home were replaced by de Wolfe with luminous ivory and pale gray walls, light muslin curtains, an abundance of mirrors, floral upholstery and pale painted Louis-style furniture. After her famous decoration project of the Colony Club (the city’s first elite social club exclusive for women), the interior designer became the most popular decorator of her time!
The interior designer from 1960 was famous for her bold interior design projects where she seamlessly married together design elements (chintz, hooked rugs, quilted textures, and overstuffed armchairs) with her creative painted floors. She was the first practitioner brought in to decorate the Kennedy White House, a position soon occupied by French interior decorator Stéphane Boudin.
However, you can see Parish’s design style in the Yellow Oval Room in the White House. “Innovation is often the ability to reach into the past and bring back what is good, what is beautiful, what is useful, what is lasting” ( Parish, 1990).
